Promoting Social Change In Asia and The Pacific Public Lecture PDF Print E-mail

The Centre for Mental Health Research and Faculty of Law, University of Auckland brings you a free public lecture: Promoting Social Change in Asia and the Pacific - The Movement to Create a Disability Rights Tribunal from the Centre for Mental Health Research and Faculty of Law, University of Auckland.

Abstract: The existence of regional human rights courts are an essential element in the enforcement of international human rights however, there is no such body in Asia and the Pacific. The absence of such a body has become more problematical since the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities has been ratified.

An internationally-recognized expert on mental disability law, Professor Michael Perlin, visiting distinguished scholar, has devoted his career to championing legal rights for people with mental disabilities. In this presentation, he will discuss the need for the development of a Disability Rights Tribunal in Asia and the Pacific.

When: 5:30pm - 7:00pm, Wednesday 18th May
Where: University of Auckland School of Engineering Lecture Theatre, 20 Symonds Street.

Titled Purple Dandelion, the book published by Exisle Publishing, is basically the story of Farida’s life, interwoven with the lives of many other survivors of domestic violence and those who took a stand against violence.
We are pleased to inform you that in the very first week of sale, Purple Dandelion has made it to Nielsen’s top 10 International Bestsellers’ List. The main reason for writing this book has been to highlight the issues of domestic violence and social oppression that happen within communities and the need for appropriate women’s refuge services, especially in Asian, African and Middle Eastern countries.
A percentage of the proceeds of Purple Dandelion will go towards the project Women Against Violence which has begun work internationally in promoting women’s right to live life without fear and violence.
