This will include discussion around the Local Government Act 2002, Amendment Bill. This bill is very important for community agencies having input into the strategic direction set by local government.
Speakers include:
David Wilson is the Director of the Institute of Public Policy at AUT in Auckland. His research focus is on local (city and regional) economic development, and he also has an extensive business background, including owning and operating a successful retail business for 17 years.
Mark Ebery is a senior Corporate Analyst at North Shore City Council with extensive international experience. He is currently working on the Council's submission to the Local Government Act 2002.
Mike Cohen QSM is Chair of the New Zealand Community Board Executive Committee (NZCBEC), Chair of Auckland Region and Far North Community Boards Inc. and Chair of Devonport Community Board.

The purpose of the meeting is to discuss community issues here on the North Shore. This is an opportunity for individuals and groups ('the grassroots') working in the community area to share thoughts on the future direction of the City with one of the leading candidates for mayor. This meeting is being designed as a discussion opportunity for Len Brown to learn about our work, our concerns and to gain insights into how future policy and structures could be shaped to help create a more sustainable City.

A useful companion piece to Living and working in New Zealand. Chapters include: coping with a change of culture, what New Zealanders are like, getting started here, meeting people, the language barrier, the different working environment, getting around the country, New Zealanders at play, and shopping. At times quirky and peppered with humour, the authors have some revealing observations and strong opinions. The section on changing cultures has a good description of the stages of ‘culture shock’ – the emotional changes you go through adjusting to a new country.

]]>Every year North Shore individuals and groups are nominated by members of the community for their outstanding voluntary contributions in a variety of categories. These nominations are reviewed by a selection panel and Civic Awards are presented to the most deserving nominations at an awards ceremony.
The North Shore City Civic Awards held during 2010 will be the last Civic Awards before North Shore’s amalgamation into the wider Auckland region. To ensure our local heroes are properly recognised, this year’s awards will recognise voluntary contributions for both the 2009 and 2010 years.
There will also be an increased number of awards and a few new categories. A new award called 'Companions of North Shore City' is being introduced, for those residing outside of the city boundaries, who have provided an outstanding service for the benefit of the wider North Shore community.
North Shore City Council encourages you to nominate the unsung heroes in your community to help give them the recognition they deserve. Nominations are open from Monday 10 May until Friday 25 June.

]]>We have an opportunity of the North Shore to participate in a free workshop on the 18th of June, 2010. Below is a synopsis of the workshop on offer, however given the costs involved in venue hire etc. I need to find out firstly, if anyone is interested and if so, how many? Please indicate your interest to me by no later than this Friday, 28th of May.
This workshop looks at interagency working to prevent family violence and how networks can take a leadership role in social change towards violence-free communities. We will look at structures and activities of family violence networks in New Zealand, and good practice in interagency work, drawing on international research. We will also look at a whole-community response, and the kind of activities and collaborations that are needed in communities to stop violence from happening in the first place.

]]>On 18th June the latest group of Quota refugee families will leave Mangere Refugee Reception Centre to go to the first home they have ever had in Auckland… at the moment though, the home is unfurnished.
From Friday 14th May until Saturday 12th June we will need to collect 10 double beds, 20 single beds, 10 sofas, 10 dining room tables (preferably with chairs), and chests of drawers, all in really good condition. They will need to be clean and without holes in the fabric, or stuffing coming out, or any significant marks on them. Our drivers are also not authorised to accept furniture which is broken or unstable, or which has missing parts.
If you would enjoy passing on furniture to us which fits our needs, we would love to hear from you! Please contact Chandra at Refugee Services if you can help. We may consider other items too.
Our drivers Jafar and John can pick up beds and other items on Fridays or Saturdays. Alternatively you are welcome to deliver to us at a mutually convenient time.

You are invited to contribute to the development of a 10-year strategy for the social services and community sector and workforce. Leaders from the social services and community sector have partnered with the Social Services Industry Training Organisation to propose a framework for discussion.
Feedback is needed from people, organisations and networks interested in the wellbeing of people and communities – from iwi, government, community or the private sector. Training and education providers should also participate in this discussion.
